Crab Pot Removal in Brookings

On December 9th, 2006, the fishing vessel Chevelle discarded 283 commercial crab pots at the Chetco River bar mouth (Brookings) during heavy weather. Many of these crab pots drifted shoreward, threatening surf access and littering the beach. For over a month, Surfrider activists on the south coast worked with agency staff and community leaders to get the problem fixed. Campaign efforts also included press releases which generated media coverage of the problem. On April 19, 2007, Oregon State Parks coordinated removal of the pots with support from the vessel owner. Many thanks to Surfrider members in Washington State for helping identify technical expertise and potential funding sources to support removal of this derelict gear.
