Please come to tonight's Coos Bay City Council meeting to show we care about our city and our bay! City Council doors open at 6:30 (500 Central Ave, Coos Bay). Protect the Bay rally at 5:30pm in front of City Hall.
Jordan Cove Energy Project (JCEP) wants to dredge our bay at 4 locations. One area is within the City of Coos Bay, and the other three are in Coos County. JCEP wants to
- (1) dredge the channel in an area with eelgrass that is habitat for young salmon, crab, and other fish;
- (2) continuing "maintenance dredging" that area for 25 years (the life of the proposed LNG project);
- (3) change the zoning from "Natural Aquatic" to "Development Aquatic," which would allow other industries to follow in their wake and turn our bay into an industrial zone.
The City of Coos Bay hired Lane Council of Governments (LCOG), a neutral third-party, to review the thousands of pages of JCEP's application.
LCOG's recommendation is for the City of Coos Bay to DENY the permit for proposed dredging.
LCOG says the City should DENY because:
"Though the majority of criteria can be objectively met, there are several criteria which staff believe are not met."
JCEP has:
- 1) failed to prove that dredging is needed for ships (even LNG ships) to safely navigate our channel;
- 2) failed to show that dredging our bay is in the public interest.
