The recent toxic mine spill into the Animas River is another warning that we need to protect our rivers. Folks in Southwestern Oregon have been concerned about renewed nickel mining exploration at Red Flat in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. The proposed strip mines can potentially do severe damage to our watersheds. The post includes an overview of the 1872 Mining Law, and why mining companies have been allowed to jeopardize communities and our wild areas.
